CUT takes part in the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia, making a presentation on the Harmonisation of Public Health and Public Safety in a Politically Conservative Environment.
CUT is selected to Chair the Harm Reduction Committee, under the National Aids Secretariat (NAS), which works under the aegis of the Prime Minister’s Office.
CUT launches its Community Container project (after a pilot phase). The Project consists of a team of six people, including a Health Care Assistant. The project aims to provide support, counselling and referral services to people who use drugs plus a basic medical service (dressings and other primary care) and HIV screening.
CUT participates in the 16th ICASA Conference (International Conference on Aids and STIs in Africa) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, making a presentation on the Community-based Harm Reduction programmes in Mauritius.
CUT receives a grant from the Global fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFTAM).
CUT inaugurates its headquarters. CUT organizes the First Conference on Opiate Use and Harm Reduction: “Let’s Face it!” to analyze the different services offered in the country in terms of Harm Reduction, and come up with recommendations. An advocacy document, as well as a Conference Report is printed and distributed.
CUT receives a grant from the Decentralised Cooperation Program of the European Union to set up an Administrative Office and step up our field projects.
CUT is registered with the Registrar of Associations in Mauritius. CUT gets a grant from the Open Society Institute (OSI) - through HIV NGO PILS, to send six of its members for a Study Tour through various harm reduction projects in Poland. CUT also invites two senior officials of the Ministry of Health & Quality of Life.
CUT is the first to launch the Needle Exchange Program (NEP) in Mauritius (the first of the Indian Ocean and Africa). CUT launches advocate work to lobby the Government for the introduction of the Methadone Substitution Therapy and for a Needle-Exchange Program at national level.
