CUT’s main field activity remains the needle exchange (NEP) program which we have launched in 2006. In 2009 after the opening of our premises, we started opening more NEP sites.
This project is supported by the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life and the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
During the year 2012, we reached about 2000 people through our field projects and have distributed more than 136,000 needles, 113,000 syringes and 14,000 condoms.
We provide communities with sterile injection equipment and take back used injecting equipment in order to reduce the transmission of blood-borne viruses (HIV / Hepatitis, etc.) and other infections related to the improper use of injecting equipment. We also give access to condoms and counseling services.
It should be noted that the opening of a Needle Exchange Site site requires community awareness, training of field workers and awareness about the importance of this type of project for people who inject drugs. We begin by training members of the community, and then field workers and peers, who themselves sensitize the beneficiaries before launching each new site.
